Input > Landscape Utilities > Generate Landscape File

The Landscape File (LCP) is generated by importing raster GIS files using this "Landscape (LCP) File Generation" dialog box.

Loading the GIS Themes

First of all, enter the latitude of the themes and select the units (Meters, Feet, or km) of the raster cells.

Clicking the checkbox to the left of each raster file type brings up a file selection dialog box.

Navigate to the correct file, make sure the file name is displayed in the File Name: box and click Open.

The file name selected will be displayed in the center box. Select the correct units for each theme to the right of the theme file name. Be sure these correctly describe the units of your data in each GIS theme before generating the .LCP file; these cannot be changed in an existing .LCP file. If your units are something other than listed for that theme, you will have to reclassify or recompute values for that theme in a GIS before loading the theme. The Fuel Model theme also requires a box to be checked if custom fuel models are present and/or if fuel model conversions will be needed.

All checkboxes for elevation, slope, aspect, fuels, and canopy cover, must be checked before the specified .LCP file can be created. A .LCP file cannot be generated without having all five themes.

Constant Values

You have had the option of using constant values for any of the non-topographic GIS themes. By selecting the Const check box at the far right of each theme, you can use a dialog box to insert constant values across the landscape instead of providing a GIS file. This can be useful for:

  1. describing very uniform fuel or vegetation conditions,

  2. describing the dominant fuel or vegetation coverage and then using the Landscape Editor to change patches of lesser fuel or vegetation types,

  3. providing for later use of the Landscape Editor when fuel or vegetation conditions are better known. For example, Height to Live Crown Base (HLCB) is not typically available on the GIS. It can be observed in the field for critical areas and then edited into the LCP file only if information on HLCB has been provided to the LCP file (using a GIS file or constant value).

Revising an Existing LCP File

  1. Click the Load File (.LCP) button (upper left in the "Landscape File Generation" dialog box). A "Select Landscape File" dialog box appears.

  2. Select the Landscape (.LCP) File to modify and click the Open button.

  3. To substitute a revised GIS file for the existing data click the check box next to the existing data file and the "Select ASCII Raster File" dialog box appears. Select the revised file and click the OPEN button.

  4. When finished adding the revised files click the Save File (.LCP) button, selecting a different output Landscape (.LCP) File name if you want to retain the original Landscape (.LCP) File.

  5. Press OK when finished.
